Religious Education

The Religious Education Program serves children in pre-school through 12th grade. It fosters the spiritual growth of the children, and prepares them for the reception of sacraments.

Although it is at the home and with the family that children first learn about God, the “formal” part of their religious education comes from programs offered by the parish. Here at Mar Thoma Sleeha Cathedral we give children the opportunity to learn about God and His love for them — and all people — through classes offered for children from 3-years old through 12th grade. The classroom instruction includes traditional teaching from our textbook series, approved by the SyroMalabar Diocese of Chicago, as well as service projects, the opportunity to receive the sacraments throughout the year and various activities to make their religion something special for each of them. We also discuss the cycle of the church year from Advent through the Feast of Christ the King.

Without their parents’ involvement, this program like all programs, would lose their meaning for the children. We look forward to joining in a partnership with you to build your child’s relationship with God, and we take this calling very seriously.

SRE was started  by Fr. Mathew Panthalanical, Mission Director. Chicago was the first mission to start regular CCD in our Syro Malabar Church in USA.

Our Mission:

The Syro-Malabar Catechetical Ministry seeks to foster a young person's growth in holiness through the teaching of Catholic Doctrine, tradition, and the experience of Christian celebration while also bringing to light their identity as a Syro-Malabar Catholic and the traditions and practices specific to our Rite. Religious education programs create opportunities for the young to receive systematic catechesis to learn and experience the faith through classes, liturgies, discussions, projects and community activities.

All facets of these programs are designed to help young people see themselves as unique children of a loving God. As a result, our young people will receive from and contribute to the parish family and society during their journey to mature in their role as Catholic witnesses of faith. The relevance of Sacraments and the importance of the presence of Jesus Christ in our daily lives are taught in a challenging and inspiring environment.

SCHOOL PRAYER

God Our Creator and our protector, we thank you for this day. We thank you for giving us life and for giving us this chance to learn more about You. Blessed Jesus, our Brother, help us to take what we learn and put it into practice in our daily lives so that we can live our lives of faith as You did. Help us to be firm in the faith in times of adversity, to be trustworthy in all that we do, to live as children of the light, even in the surrounding darkness, to place our trust in You, to not be afraid to do the right thing, to be strong when we feel weak, to love our neighbors as we love ourselves, and, if necessary, to lay down our lives as You did. Transform our hearts Lord and make us a new creation that carries this light of faith with us wherever we go. In your sweet name we pray. Amen.

PARENTS PRAYER

O Father of mankind, who hast given unto me these my children, and committed them to my charge to bring them up for you, and to prepare them for everlasting life: assist me with your heavenly grace, that I may be able to fulfill this most sacred duty and stewardship. Teach me both what to give and what to withhold; when to reprove and when to forbear; make me gentle, yet firm; considerate and watchful; and deliver me equally from the weakness of indulgence, and the excess of severity; and grant that, both by word and example, I may be careful to lead them in the ways of wisdom and true pity, so that at last I may, with them, be admitted to the unspeakable joys of our true home in heaven, in the company of the blessed Angels and Saints. Amen

4th Annual Ward Based Bible Jeopardy
April 19, 2015

The School of Religious Education hosted their annual Ward Based Bible Jeopardy Competition on April 19th, 2015.  9 wards picked and trained teams to complete in the competition that highlighted the student’s knowledge on the History of the Syro-Malabar Church, the Book of Proverbs, the Book of Daniel, and Syro-Malabar Liturgy.
The competition was exciting to watch and more interesting to learn from as the participants did a wonderful job of answering the questions.  When it was all finally over, St. Bartholomew’s Ward was crowned the new Jeopardy Champion for 2015.  Congratulations to St. Bartholomew’s team members along with everyone who participated in this year’s competition.

7th & 8th Grade Retreat
Cabrini Retreat Center, Des Plaines
March 6-8, 2015

In early March, students in the 7th and 8th grade participated in a school sponsored retreat at Cabrini Retreat Center in Des Plaines.  The retreat was geared towards enhancing the content that each grade was learning in class.  7th graders have been introduced to the Theology of the Body and were led in retreat by Mr. Shiju Philip from Detroit.  The 8th graders have been preparing for their Confirmation and were led in retreat by the Sehion team.

Both groups of students enjoyed the retreat and learned a lot while also being able to experience the presence and love of God the Father.  Let us continue to keep these young people in our prayers as they continue to grow in their faith.
